Opening Letter
The Kinetic Grand Championship returns this weekend, bringing its particular brand of mechanical absurdity to the streets and shores. Saturday through Monday, contraptions that defy both physics and good sense will attempt the course from Arcata to Ferndale. Meanwhile, Eureka's Friday Night Market reopens in Old Town on May 22nd.

Weather Report

Lady Humboldt's Pick

Kinetic Grand Championship
Three days of human-powered sculpture racing through sand, water, and mud. Saturday begins on the Arcata Plaza, where engineering meets optimism in forms that defy both physics and description. The Manila dunes on day one separate the ambitious from the prepared.

The Five
Rudresh Mahanthappa Hero Trio
Wednesday 20th · 8:00 PM · Arcata Playhouse
World-class jazz touches down in Arcata on its way to San Francisco. The kind of evening that reminds one why small venues are most winning.
Monsters in May Drag & Burlesque Show
Friday 22nd · 7:00 PM · Arcata Theatre Lounge
A variety of genres and aesthetics converge for an evening of theatrical mischief. The ATL has been cultivating its reputation for memorable Friday nights.
Valley Wolf vs DJ Hispanic at the Disco
Saturday 23rd · 8:00 PM · Arcata Miniplex
Modesto's Latin-psychedelic ambassadors bring cumbia rhythms and fuzz-rock to the Miniplex.
Humboldt Steel Pan & Percussion Festival
Sunday 24th · 1:00 PM · Blue Lake Casino & Hotel
The annual gathering of steel drum ensembles returns. Free admission, more than one hundred musicians, and the kind of rhythms that make standing still feel like a personal failing.
The Imaginary Invalid
Thursday 21st · 8:00 PM · North Coast Repertory Theatre
A famous satirical French comedy-ballet centered on Argan, a wealthy hypochondriac. The physicians are confident, the maid is smarter than everyone else, and very little medical advice should be trusted.

Field Notes
The California condors have been making themselves known at Dolason Prairie this week, appearing in pairs with the casual authority of birds who have decided extinction was an unfounded rumor. Two were spotted Thursday morning circling the prairie with wingspans that make the resident ravens look like sparrows with ambition. Their return to Humboldt County after more than a century suggests the restoration effort is working. Birders have been gathering at dawn, binoculars raised, watching enormous black wings wheel over the prairie in a sight Humboldt County had not seen for more than a century.

Hike of the Week
Rockefeller Loop Trail
The Rockefeller Loop Trail in the Avenue of the Giants offers what might be the county's most idyllic introduction to old-growth redwoods. The flat loop wanders for just under a mile past specimens that make the word ‘tree’ feel somewhat insufficient. The Rockefeller Tree itself stands near the trail's midpoint, one of the tallest coast redwoods alive today. The trail requires no particular fitness, only the willingness to stop repeatedly and look upward. In summer, the Eel River moves turquoise and cold beside the opening stretch of trail, adding a level of scenery that feels almost excessive.

Morning Spot
Witness Coffee
Heavy metal moves through the speakers, oracle cards and books line the windowsills, and the dark interior feels less like a coffee shop than a carefully curated refuge. Drinks arrive with names like “Mist in the Trees” and “Lil Baddie Fladdie,” while an impressive amount of care goes into the entirely plant-based menu. Lady Humboldt appreciates an establishment that understands atmosphere is part of the recipe.

From the Archives
This week in 1917, the Redwood Highway was declared open for automobile traffic between Eureka and San Francisco, though the journey required "several days of difficult driving" according to contemporary accounts. The first motorists discovered that the road had opinions about their progress, particularly near Richardson Grove. Nearly a century later, the highway maintains a similar editorial stance.

Almanac

Featured Artist
Sam Whitlach

The hand-painted signs of Sam Whitlach have a particular quality, the kind that makes one slow down while passing, then circle back for a proper look. Each letter carries the weight of someone who genuinely appreciates the craft. Lady Humboldt recently came across one of his signs while wandering through a community garden and was pleased to find that handmade signage still exists in the wild, adding considerable charm wherever it appears. One may visit his shop in Fortuna, where he was recently seen hand-painting the storefront sign himself, brush in hand and entirely committed to the endeavor.

Featured Event

The Eureka Friday Night Market returns to Old Town on May 22 at 5:30 PM, bringing the county's makers, food vendors, and performers into the historic district. The market has developed its own ecosystem over the years, one where handmade wares mingle with local produce and buskers provide the soundtrack to commerce conducted at a properly unhurried pace.
